Threatened Existence
Earthquakes
and Rainstorms have seriously damaged the Ennis House.
Wright’s 1924 concrete block masterpiece which has been used as a location in numerous Hollywood Films including “Blade Runner” and “House on Haunted Hill” was “tagged” by the City of Los Angeles Building and Safety Inspectors in March 2005 due to failing retaining wall caused by that winter’s severe rainstorms. Due to the efforts of the Ennis House Foundation, the building’s emergency status has been downgraded, interim construction funding as been secured, and the work needed to stabilize the retaining wall, repair the roof and perform other restoration tasks has been completed.
The mission of the Ennis House Foundation is to fully restore the Ennis House. Present estimates are that completion of the needed work on this international architectural treasure will require upwards of $10 million. |
